Corbin II, Burzynski, Miller, Ferrando, and Cully Earn Wins At Earl Veeder Memorial

Salem, Oregon- The 2011-12 Salem Indoor Winter Series presented by Les Schwab Tires and Knecht’s Auto Parts concluded their season last Saturday for the 5th annual Earl Veeder Memorial. Extra money was up for grabs for the Micro Sprints courtesy of Dura Coat Products and the Pro 4’s had a qualifying/trophy dash bonuses from PJ Motorsports. Micros, Pro 4’s, Midgets, Dwarf Cars, and 500cc Open Kage Karts were on hand for the evening as well.
Ryan Cully of Burlington, Washington made the journey for the only Midget entry for the night. Sweeping the night’s events Cully’s return to the Salem Indoor Speedway brought excitement from the fans during intermission as he tossed out t-shirts to the crowd during intermission. Allison Journey of Springfield accumulated the most points over the course of the season to earn the championship.
The Micro Sprint feature saw a great race between both Kyle Miller of Eugene and Kyle Mehner of Damascus in the main event in the opening laps. Mehner initially had the lead till Miller tracked him down and overtook him and went on for the win in the caution free race. Kyle Mehner finished in second with Mark Pallas of Salem in third followed by Jeff Hatcher of Hillsboro and A.J. Thomas of Mill City rounding up the top five.
Kyle Miller, in his second career Micro Sprint start, completed a clean sweep with fast time of the night and winning the heat race. Justen McConnville of Dundee earned the most points over the season to become the Micro Sprint champion.
The Dwarf Cars again had an impressive field mustered for the final race of the year with fifteen entrants. Pole sitter Henry Corbin II put on a dominating performance in front of the fans to win his second straight feature and fourth overall of the season. Jim Fisher of Portland was second, Henry Corbin III of Molalla third, and the rest of the top five made up of Cascade Lock’s Kevin Benson and Todd Peterson.
Henry Corbin II performed a clean sweep with fast time of the night and heat race win in addition to the feature victory. Other heat race winners were Brian Smith of Albany and Brian Hicks of Eugene. A consolation main was run with the winner the only transfer car and Todd Peterson managed to survive and make the show. Henry Corbin II was atop the table when all points were tallied to become the season’s champion in the Dwarf Cars.
The Pro 4’s seen an all Ferrando field with seven cars making it out for the last race of the year. Tobey Ferrando of Salem put on another dominating performance earning his second straight win and his third overall win of the season. Tim Ferrando of Salem finished in second followed by Taryn Ferrando also of Salem. The rest of the top five was consisted of Megan Ferrando of Salem in fourth and T.J. Ferrando of Canby in fifth.
Tobey Ferrando performed a clean sweep of the events by earning the fast time and trophy dash award along with the heat race win. After the dust settled “Papa” Tom Ferrando of Keizer was crowned the series champion despite not winning a race.
The Saturday series for the Open Kage brought ten cars most of which had ran earlier in the day in the Kage Cup qualifying event. Andrew Burzynski of Bend won his first race of the season on the biggest weekend of the year for the Salem Indoor Speedway. Jake Mann of Monroe, Washington was second followed by Matt Enos of Silverton with the rest of the top five made up of Devin Barnes from Edmonds, Washington and Chad Woods of Gresham.
The Open Kage was the only class that did not qualify for the evening’s races instead they ran two sets of heats. Andrew Burzynski won heat one while heat two was won by Matt Enos. Andrew Burzynski when it was all said and done was crowned the Saturday Open Kage champion.
