Ferguson Captures Kage Cup; Leads All Forty Laps To Earn Trophy
By Ben Deatherage
Salem, Oregon- It was the most anticipated event of the 2011-12 schedule at the Salem Indoor Speedway located inside the Forster Pavilion on the Oregon State Fairgrounds. The first annual Kage Cup presented by Enos Upholstery and Arrow Striping, and associate sponsors Jerry Dills Trucking, Extreme Outlaw Karts, and D-Amyx Construction, was a breathtaking spectacle for all on hand as Jake Ferguson of Cottage Grove took complete advantage of his inside pole starting position to lead the whole event and win his second race of the year at the giant kart track. Eight cautions occurred during the venture and all sixteen cars that started finished along with all being on the lead lap. The race also opened up the inaugural season to the Western Outlaw Kart Championship Series.
Ferguson held the lead tighter than a closed shut alligator’s mouth as he approached the tail end of lapped traffic twice only for a yellow flag to come out. On both occasions fifth starter Patrick Dills also from Cottage Grove brought Ferguson’s leading margin to an absolute minimum but could not get beside the #22J Comfort Suites of Salem/Dragonfly Decals entry. The #5D All Seasons Equipment/Jerry Dills Trucking/Weeman’s Small Engine Repair machine on the final restart on lap thirty seven had to hold off a challenge from the #33 Browns Towing of Tommy Brown from Missoula, MT for second.
As the race concluded Dills would finish in the runner up position followed by Tommy Brown. Dallas Melby of Ravensdale, Washington finished in fourth followed by Rick Schamber of Ukiah, California rounding up the top five. The rest of the top ten was the following drivers: 6. Colby Hagan of Huson, MT, 7. Bricen James of Albany, 8. Ben Hinkle from Meridian, ID, 9. Matt Moberly of Central Point, 10. Andrew Burzynski of Bend.
The event consisted of two days of racing with the first day locking in the inside row positions. Jake Ferguson won the event followed by Tommy Brown, Patrick Dills, Ben Hinkle, Rick Schamber, Gary Brown of Missoula, Montana, Dayne Amyx of Boise, Idaho, and Renee Angel of Woodinville, Washington was locked in only if they accepted their positions. The only driver not to accept was Gary Brown who looked to aim for the outside pole position the next day.
That meant that nine cars would transfer out of the Outside Qualifier on Sunday where Eric Gannon of Redding, California won the race. With him brought into the feature Colby Hagan, Bricen James, Dallas Melby, Robert Venner of Crabtree, Matt Moberly, Gary Brown, Andrew Burzynski, and Jeff Bell of Meridian, Idaho.
The B Main was won by Ron Ratterree of Greenleaf, Idaho and brought along with him to the Outside Qualifier Matt Moberly, Devin Barnes of Edmonds, Washington, and Jeff Bell. The C Main saw Ron Osbourne of Boring win the event while Matt Moberly, and Dana Evans of Garden City, Idaho transferred as well.
Matt Moberly was the only driver to truly play alphabet soup after a devastating wreck in the opening lap of his second heat race put him in the C Main. But from the depths of the C Main he was able to climb all the way to the promise land and start in the feature and even finish within the top ten. Jeff Bell received the close shave award by being the last car to transfer and wasn’t even supposed to transfer but a transfer car in the Outside Qualifier was light at the scales and disqualified.
The next scheduled race for the Western Outlaw Kart Championship Series will be on July 6th and 7th for the annual Wild West Shootout at the Big Sky Kartway in Missoula, Montana. The Western Outlaw Kart Championship Series is a touring Kage Kart series throughout the western United States visiting four venues in Oregon, Montana, California, and Idaho.
