Saturday’s Earl Veeder Memorial Caps Off Big Car Indoor Series
By Ben Deatherage
Salem, Oregon- The Salem Indoor Winter Series presented by Knecht’s Auto Parts and Les Schwab Tires finishes the 2011-12 wintertime series in the Forster Pavilion at the Oregon State Fairgrounds this Saturday night February 4th. The annual Earl Veeder Memorial is named in honor of longtime driver Earl Veeder who ran all over the Norwest in his decade’s long career. The night will feature Midgets, Micro Sprints, Dwarf Cars, Pro 4’s, and Open Kage Karts.
The Midgets have been very light season but Ed Luke made the long trip from Bellingham, WA in the sixth race of the season. Allison Journey of Springfield has been to the venue the most in the 2011-12 campaign.
The Micro Sprints will have a $500 to win main event this Saturday and is sure to bring a climactic finish to the season. Justen McConnville of Dundee finds himself the kid with the target on his back as he has crossed the line first in all of the action so far this year.
Dwarf Car fans have got to be satisfied with the turnout of this class this season as they have had double digit numbers in each event. Henry Corbin II of Molalla has three wins this season while other victors this year include Henry Corbin III of Molalla, Nik Larson of Graham, WA, and Brad Martin of Warren. Only ten points separate first from fourth place in the championship table.
The Pro 4 class is dominated by the clan Ferrando with Terry, Tyler, Tobey, and Zac all earning at least one win this season. Tom Ferrando of Keizer is the points leader despite not winning a race yet this season. The class has also attracted the attention of some Hornet drivers that have competed against them in the last two races.
For some Open Kage drivers it will be a very long day for them after participating in the day program of the Kage Cup. Andrew Burzynski from beautiful Central Oregon looks to capture the championship while Robert Venner of Crabtree and Silverton’s Matt Enos are behind him. Look to see an inflated field in this class to try out the track for Sunday’s finale of the Kage Cup presented by Enos Upholstery and Arrow Striping.
Hot laps are scheduled for 5:30 PM followed by qualifying, heat races, and main events. The Salem Indoor Speedway is the one of the largest Karting tracks in the Western United States. This semi-banked dirt oval hosts winter indoor racing from October to February in the Forster Pavilion at the Oregon State Fairgrounds.
