Kage Cup This Weekend Sure To Be Climactic Close To Long Season
By Ben Deatherage
Salem, Oregon- This coming Saturday and Sunday will mark the first ever Kage Cup presented by Enos Upholstery and Arrow Striping for the final two races of the Salem Indoor Speedway’s Kart program. Saturday will be completely qualifying events as well as the day show of the Salem Indoor Winter Kart Series presented by Knecht’s Auto Parts. A reminder for teams planning to make the trip that there will be an open practice on Friday night from 6 to 9 PM and Saturday morning registration will be open from 7 until 8:45 AM.
“We wanted to make sure that there would still be a prominent event at Salem with no King of the West this year,” commented Matt Enos owner of Enos Upholstery and regular at the Salem Indoor Speedway.
It is expected to draw a very large field of cars especially from the ranks of the 500cc Open Kage. Patrick Dills of Cottage Grove won the Sunday event while Saturday night was captured by Albany’s Bricen James. Other winners this season include Jake Claasen of Bend, Renee Angel of Woodinville, WA, Robert Venner of Crabtree, Devin Barnes of Edmunds, WA, Jake Mann of Monroe, WA, Tommy Brown of Missoula, MT, and Jake Ferguson of Cottage Grove.
Entering the weekend in the 250cc ranks Brendan Waterman is the man to beat as he has won the last four in a row. Bricen James is the only other winner in the class in the 2011-12 season.
The 125cc class has been highly competitive with several new drivers transitioning from the 5HP ranks. Eric Scofield of Albany won the last event on Sunday while Saturday’s main event Kyle Cormican of Vancouver, WA beat out the competition. Victory lane has already been visited by other pilots including Megan Richardson of Springfield and Austin Jones of Lebanon.
The 5HP Open class has been just as competitive but young Crash Schlaht of Happy Valley who has won the last three events. Brightwood’s Tyler Pagel and Duane Johnson of Portland are the only other winners this season in a class that is sure to produce a great crop of talent in the years to come.
The Pee Wee classification has been all about McClain Beaudoin of Lebanon who has won the last five events in the Pee Wee Briggs classification. He also has four wins in the Pee Wee Subaru ranks as well this season.
The ¼ Midget Junior ranks have been recently dominated by Bailey Barney of Eagle Creek winning the last three features. The only driver to beat the youngster is Jake Herz of Sandy who has two wins to his credit in three starts. The ¼ Open races have all been won by Bailey’s older sister Lindsay winning all twelve events thus far.
We hope that everyone can make it out for the final two races of the season. The format will be a little bit different and can be obtained via the Salem Speedway Facebook page. The Salem Indoor Speedway is the one of the largest Karting tracks in the Western United States. This semi-banked dirt oval hosts winter indoor racing from October to February in the Forster Pavilion at the Oregon State Fairgrounds.
