Luke, Corbin, James, McConnville, and Ferrando Visit Victory Lane Saturday Night
By Ben Deatherage
Salem, Oregon- In the sixth round of the 2011-12 Salem Indoor Series , in the Forster Pavilion at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, fans were treated to some fantastic racing despite the rather cold temperatures outside. Micro Sprints, Dwarf Cars, Pro 4’s, 500cc Open Kage Karts, and Midgets were on hand for the event with drivers coming from all over the states of Oregon and Washington. Main event results for the day events are listed below as well.
Ed Luke of Bellingham, Washington was the lone Midget on hand for the evening and took care of all events for a clean sweep. Luke did suffer some damage in the main event after making some rather hard contact with the outside retaining wall in turn three.
The Dwarfs Cars brought the largest car count of their season and the biggest class of the night with eighteen drivers making the journey to the Mid-Willamette Valley venue. Despite having four cautions occurring in the twenty lap feature Henry Corbin II of Molalla took care of business leading the entire distance to capture his third win in the 2011-12 season and also swept all of the evening’s events. Doug McVae of Scappoose posted a season best finish of second while third went to Henry Corbin III of Molalla. The top five was completed with Brian Smith of Albany and Robert O’Neil of Waldport.
In preliminary action Jim Fisher of Portland won the action packed event and brought along three other drivers that transferred Mike Harrison of St. Helens, Kevin Benson from Cascade Locks, and Travis Tolman of St. Helens. Earlier in the night Henry Corbin II set fast time of the night at 12.225 seconds while heat races were won by Corbin II, Brian Smith, and Robert O’Neil.
The 500cc Open Kage Karts featured an action packed events with teenager Bricen James of Albany leading the entire event despite several cautions and restarts taking place. Veteran Jake Claasen of Bend seemed to have a run on James for the lead midway through the fifteen lap event but would have to go back to second due to a caution. Five cautions occurred during the race which changed the landscape of the top five on several occasions.
With Bricen James’ win it would be his fourth against the 500’s adding to the three 250cc victories earlier this season. Jake Claasen was the runner up while third place went to Ron Osbourne of Boring, fourth to Dallas Melby of Ravensdale, Washington, and fifth to Jefferson’s Todd Boshart. The 500’s were the only class that did not qualify instead they ran two set of heat races. Heat race winners were Ron Osbourne, Todd Boshart, Jake Claasen, and Robert Venner of Crabtree.
In the Micro Sprint ranks Justen McConnville of Dundee scored yet another win at the Salem Indoor Speedway. The teenager from just outside of Newberg earned his seventh feature win with the series. The main started off with an opening lap incident between pole sitter Mark Pallas of Salem and McConnville.
On the restart McConville tracked down Steve Adelman of Salem to grab the lead and go on to win the race. Adelman finished a respectable second while Mark Pallas was scored as third. Fast time of the night was Pallas at 11.310 while he would later go on to win the heat race.
In the Pro 4’s it was another family affair with clan Ferrando and company with Tobey Ferrando leading the whole race and winning his second event of the year and completed a clean sweep. Thomas Ferrando of Salem finished in second with Taryn Ferrando of Keizer in third. The rest of the top five consisted of Ben Byam of Silverton and Phil Plora of Portland. Fast time of the night was Tobey Ferrando at 12.935 and heat races were won by Tobey Ferrando and Albany’s Zac Ferrando.
Well that does it for this race recap next Saturday night will feature the seventh and final race for the night series with the 5th annual Earl Veeder Memorial. In the Kart ranks it will be a very busy weekend with the first day of the Kage Cup presented by Enos Upholstery and Arrow Striping beginning around 9:05 AM with pit meeting. The thirteenth race for the Indoor Winter Kart Series will be run alongside and will transition into the night show.
